’10:50 AM, and the line is wrapped halfway around the block. For the eager, hungry locals, Blues City Deli is the go-to place in the Benton Park neighborhood of South Saint Louis, Missouri. There is a changing daily special, and the main menu of favorites like the Benton Park (ham, roast beef, turkey, and provel cheese), the Veno (hot roast beef with Au jus, bacon, and cheese), and the Chicken Shack Ranch (applewood smoked and pulled chicken, bacon, & cheese). You can also get extras like pickles, tomatoes, onions, etc. Prices are quite reasonable, usually less than $10 a sandwich. Plus, for a bit extra, you can “make it a meal” with chips and a drink. The best suggestion I have is to bring a friend along. Each order a different item and share half. You can try two for the price of one. It’s a great deal; it’s how the locals do it.

Not just known for their food, this joint goes all out on Thursday nights with a great mix of jazz and blues bands. The stage is a step above the main floor. You can reach out and interact with the musicians. Within a few minutes of the show starting, folks will start dancing along. Don’t miss this exceptional, out of the way deli. Here I am re-visiting an old friend of mine. I wrote this article last summer, and it was published in an online paper in July! I’m not going to lie; I want to drive to BCD RIGHT NOW to grab a hot sandwich, it just sounds soooooo good! Is there anywhere out there that you absolutely can’t WAIT to get back to once this COVID-19 craziness is over?? We took for granted how many amazing places there are to have a good sandwich around here! Now that we can’t easily access these types of sites for risk of exposure (if they’re even open anyways), just gives us all the more reason to stay home and stay distanced so that hopefully this ends soon!
