Thanksgiving 2022 safety tips brought to you by https://www.hippo.com/ . Thanks to Courtney Klosterman, a home insights expert, for the information. Also, a shout-out to Sarah with Pitch Public Relations for sending Courtney my way!

Seriously, though, can you believe that it’s already turkey day? Or ham, deer, or chicken – whatever you prefer. With Thanksgiving or any holiday, a host of potential problems typically come.

Cooking in general

A lot of folks choose to fry their turkeys or Thanksgiving dinners. Unfortunately, most house fires begin in the kitchen, per Hippo. That makes sense with the amount of food that comes from people’s kitchens around holidays!

Steps to avoid kitchen fires:

  • Don’t deep fry your turkey INSIDE! Common sense, people!!
  • Keep a fire extinguisher close; somewhere in the kitchen is best, and Hippo suggests under the sink! (Ingenious)
  • Ensure your ventilation systems are working, above or near the stove, at a minimum!
  • Consistently change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
  • Don’t leave items unattended in the kitchen, on the stove, or in the oven.
  • Keep the alcohol away from flammable areas.

Fireplaces

Another fun tradition surrounding the holidays is sitting in a cozy chair by a warm fire. It’s something I look forward to all year – wrapping up in my favorite blanket, grabbing a good book, and sitting by a crackling fire. Sometimes, hot cocoa in hand.

Per Hippo’s recent survey, over a third of people (38%) responded that they plan on using their fireplaces. Of that third, only half have protection around said fireplace, and only one-third (35%) say they have access to a fire extinguisher.

Tips to stay safe using your fireplace:

  • Clean your fireplace after each use.
  • Install smoke alarms around the fireplace, and ensure you consistently check them and change batteries!
  • Keep a fire extinguisher near! (Seeing a trend here?)
  • Keep children, pets, and flammable objects away from the fireplace.
  • Do NOT leave the fireplace lit/on all night unattended!!!

Online shopping

You know you’ve done it; ordered something online. Bought that perfect gift for that perfect someone. I’m guilty!! Unfortunately, there are entirely too many people who thrive on people shopping online. Your porches are just right there, inviting them to come and take what you paid for. It’s enough to drive anyone insane!!

Hippo has some tips for that as well!

  • Get a smart device – like Simplisafe or Ring, both of which are Hippo partners! A device like that sometimes is enough to keep unwanted porch thieves away!
  • Schedule deliveries for the weekends when you are more likely to be home or stay home when you know a delivery is coming!
  • See if there’s a way to require a signature of whatever your package is – that way, the item/parcel can’t be left on the porch without YOU!
  • Ask the delivery driver if they could place the package somewhere “hidden” – behind a plant, piece of furniture, or something along those lines.
  • Grap your item off the porch immediately! Don’t let it sit there for hours!

What are your plans?

Now that we’ve discussed some “fun” items that will help you and yours enjoy the upcoming holiday – what are your plans? Let me know!

Sad to say that my son and I both have strep! Not only strep for Declan, but Scarlet fever to boot. It’s miserable. We finally got some medicine; however, it took an extra day due to national shortages! Sp very frustrating! I’d rather it be me waiting for my meds than my kiddo!

Aside from that, we’re hoping that we can visit my folks, as well as my in-laws. It’s just that time of year when everyone gets ill and passes things back and forth. I’ve also been quite fortunate to receive many books lately from people who trust me enough to give their clients honest reviews of their works!

Many of those books will be featured in upcoming gift guides/blogs for you and yours, so check back soon!

Much love,

Kelly Ann
