Shellice Beharie just wrote her debut book for kids, “Prince and His Mother’s Crown.” It’s a super sweet, short read that’s perfect for kids. With large print, and plenty of colorful, fun pages, any kid would be happy to read this book with mom or dad!

Ms. Beharie wrote this book after the passing of her son, Nicholas. I asked her what made her come up with this exact storyline to honor him, and following is her response:

Nicholas’ younger brother has a fascination with my hair. Nicholas encouraged me to write a story about his brother loving to play in my hair because Nicholas loved books and was an avid reader.

This book encapsulates a childs’ love and happiness with being able to play with mom’s hair! Kids can come up with quite the entertaining stories! Dragon-fighting, fruits, and more!

Thankfully, this won’t be the only book in that Shellice Beharie will be writing! She has the next story already planned out! Gave me a bit of a teaser in our Q&A, too.

Me: Your website states that you will be continuing this storyline. When can we expect the next edition to be out? What will its’ focus be on this time?

Shellice Beharie: At this time I have no set date for my next release but will let my audience know when that time draws near. The next book in my series is titled “Prince and His Mother’s Crown: Hair Pocalypse”. Not to give too much away, Prince gets the surprise of his life!

Ms. Beharie has a winner here for sure!

I hope you’ll go out and take a look at this awesome children’s book that focuses on the love between a mother and her child! I am in awe of the story in general, due to Ms. Beharie being blind! I asked her to fill me in on how she is able to do this, considering that fact, and here was her answer:

My Mac Book Air computer has Voice Over Keys that help me navigate my screen without me being able to see it. I use a series of commands to navigate selections and options on my computer. Initially, this can be very complex and arduous, however, it’s all possible.

As you can see, I had a few follow up questions for her once I finished the book! Here’s the remainder of our short Q&A:

Me: You’ve lived overseas at some point in time. What was that like for you, and where did you live?

Ms. Beharie: I was eight years old when my family lived overseas in Guam, and since then have traveled extensively. It was very interesting being one of the only African Americans among native Guamanian and Asian children at my school. That exposure gave me the opportunity very early to learn about different cultures.

Me: What is your favorite quote, and why?

Shellice Beharie: “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Me: Do you have any extraordinary things set up in your sons’ honor, aside from this book series? For instance, a fund dedicated to his memory? Or a walk that occurs every year? Anything like that I could link to this post for you?

Shellice Beharie: The Nicholas Beharie-Soto Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at his school since 2019. The funds for this year have been earmarked for minority student assistance in order to maintain racial diversity in its student body. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a particularly adverse impact on the African-American, and Hispanic families at Pearl School.

I’d love to know what you all think of this!? I love how much fun Prince has in his momma’s hair, and I know you’d love it too! Check out Ms. Beharie’s page where you can look at more information and buy the book if you want!

One of my other favorite children’s stories I reviewed is All About Grace! You can check that out here! It’s also a series of stories and they’re so fun for kids!
