Rise: Surviving the Fight of My Life

W.O.W. The thought that kept running through my mind the entire time I was reading, “Rise,” by Paige VanZant. The book was so wonderful and terrible all at once that I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in one day. There’s nothing more powerful than a story of overcoming our worst fears/enemies/flashbacks/setbacks. Reading through Ms. VanZant’s story will bring you to tears frequently.

Everyone goes through trials and tribulations during their lives; but some to more of an extent than others. The things that this young girl endured and still managed to come out on top after all was said and done is nothing short of astounding. I found myself both rooting for her and wanting to knock in several peoples’ teeth (or worse) as I was reading along! Definitely yanked on my heartstrings on more than one occasion to boot!

The fact that there are children out there, OUR CHILDREN, who think that it is acceptable to treat another human being the way that they treated her is despicable. The people involved in the story are undoubtedly ashamed of themselves (and if they aren’t – well….) – most probably married with families, and young children. One can only hope that their children aren’t made in the image of their parents. It’s a wonder that Ms. VanZant didn’t and/or doesn’t go after them – I don’t think I could be that strong!!

All the hard stuff aside though, this young woman is an amazing mix of complicated human emotion, raw feelings, shattered expectations of life; and the ability to rise above it all and come out a champion. Which she has accomplished time and again since beginning her love affair with MMA fighting. She’s a true champion, who had to believe in herself when it was all said and done – and had the family support behind her to thrust her into the spotlight and help her attain her dreams throughout her entire life.

I enjoy following Ms. VanZant and her new(ish) hubby on InstaGram @paigevanzant – she’s an amazing athlete, wonderful power chick, and keeps it all together, while also being like an open book for her fans. You either love her or you don’t. I, personally, love her and look forward to her next match in the ring. Or turn on Dancing with the Stars – whichever comes first.

Love ya,

Kelly Ann
